Saint John, NB – MindCare New Brunswick is now taking team registrations for the 2010 Tim Hortons World 3 on 3 Street Hockey Championship. The third annual tournament will take place over the weekend of April 30, May 1 and 2, 2010 at the Marco Polo Cruise Terminal and Pugsley Wharf in Saint John. “The Saint John Port Authority has once again demonstrated their incredible commitment to this event by partnering with us to develop this location,” said John McAloney, Event Chair. “The logistical requirements for an event such as this are huge and the cruise ship terminal will provide a terrific, enclosed venue for our players and spectators. We will also be designating two playing sections with 13 hockey surfaces on Pugsley Wharf, one for adults and one for youth.”
In partnership with both the Saint John Boys and Girls Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saint John, MindCare is introducing a youth division this year. The event will be attracting youth between the ages of seven and 18 to take part. There will be four categories within this division: ages 7-9, 10-12, 13-15 and 16-18.
The adult division, which is for players 19 years of age and over, will remain the same as last year. In the competitive division, the event will feature a Men’s under 35, Men’s 35 and over and Women’s Open. In the recreational division, there is a Men’s Open and Women’s Open division.
Our presenting sponsor for the event is Tim Hortons. MindCare is pleased to announce that Alpine Hockey is our Platinum Sponsor. Our Gold Sponsors are the City of Saint John, J.D. Irving, Limited and Acadia Broadcasting (Country 94.1, 97.3 the Wave and 98.1 The Tide). Mariner Partners joins us this year as our Silver Sponsor.

Saint John has a new uptown showdown
Saint John, NB – MindCare launches the first World 3 on 3 Street Hockey Championship to take place on Long Wharf, May 2 – 4, 2008. It could be you!
“It’s a great way to promote recreational activity, our uptown, and most of all our mental health,” says John McAloney, chair of the World 3 on 3 Street Hockey Championship. “We are planning on crowds of people from all over enjoying our local businesses, our waterfront and participating in physical activity.” The MindCare fundraiser hopes to capture the success of Plaster Rock’s Pond Hockey Championship. MindCare New Brunswick is a voluntary non-profit fundraising and granting organization dedicated to the betterment of the mental health of the people of New Brunswick. The Foundation accomplishes its task by raising and administering funds for mental health research, educational activities, community programs and services and the purchase of equipment. “Mental health impacts many lives,” says Peggy Brittain, MindCare Coordinator. “As a community we need to promote a better understanding to lesson the stigma, so people will talk about it and get help. The World 3 on 3 Street Hockey Championship is a way to take an activity that already has a following, and use it to raise money and awareness on an important topic.”
Already over 600 people have signed-up from St. Andrews, Saint John, Miramichi, Fredericton, Bathurst, Harvey Station, and Newfoundland. First Place Winners of each Division will receive a one of kind World Championship Ring designed by Gary Spicer, owner of Goldsmith Studio in Sears, along with a World Championship Jacket from Key Industries.
“We could not host an event of this caliber without the generous support of our sponsors,” says Brittain. “The feedback and excitement this idea has generated is exceptional. Our local community has come forward with a venue, human resources, supplies, funds, transportation and promotions.” Platinum Sponsors include the Saint John Port Authority, City of Saint John, Alpine, the Wave, CHSJ, the Tide, Vito’s and United Rentals.
“We truly believe the World 3 on 3 Street Hockey Championship has potential to grow into a signature event for Saint John,” says McAloney. “Why wouldn’t people want to come from all over to play harbour side in the beautiful port city?”

The World 3 on 3 Street Hockey Championship is Drawing Rave Reviews
| Dave MacLean Telegraph-Journal Published Friday April 4th, 2008 Appeared on page C4 SAINT JOHN – Even before the official opening faceoff, the inaugural World 3 on 3 Street Hockey Championship is drawing rave reviews. The tournament, scheduled May 2-4 at Long Wharf, is being held as a fundraiser for MindCare New Brunswick. |
Facing off above are Peter Georgoudis, left, and Nick Georgoudis, right, honorary co-chairmen of the World 3 on 3 Street Hockey Championship. About to drop the ball is Mayor Norm McFarlane. |
| Organizers say they have modeled the event on the very successful World Pond Hockey Championship in Plaster Rock and they aspire to match that success with a springtime street version on Saint John’s waterfront.
“Plaster Rock is an amazing event,” organizing committee chairman John McAloney said at a noon-hour press conference Thursday at Vito’s restaurant. “They have 400 teams pre-register for 120 positions. Now, they have a lottery to get in. We hope to achieve that level of popularity and we hope it’s just a matter of time.” The tourney is well on its way to achieving that kind of success already. With more than four weeks remaining before the first game, there are 60 teams entered with 10 players on each team. McAloney said the ultimate goal is to attract 100 teams and organizers have received inquiries from people in 12 countries. McAloney said including ball hockey in his group’s major annual fundraiser was an easy selection for a Saint Johner who played the game on city streets as a youth. “Being a north ender and playing ball hockey all my life, that’s all we did,” he said. “In the springtime we have longer nights and it was an easy choice.” McAloney said the Long Wharf site would include 15 courts that would allow for as many as 30 teams to be playing at the same time. He said there would be two large tents located on the site and that parking would be available for 2,000 vehicles. “It’s going to be an absolute beehive of activity,” he said. “And we want the people of Saint John to know they’re more than welcome to come join us during the event.” Organizers also introduced honorary chairmen Nick and Peter Georgoudis of Vito’s, who are long-time hockey supporters in the city. They also showed off a drawing of the championship rings – designed after Stanley Cup rings – that will be presented to the winners. The tournament is important for MindCare – the province’s only non-profit organization dedicated strictly to the betterment of New Brunswickers’ mental health, said co-ordinator Peggy Brittain. “Mental health impacts many lives,” said Brittain. “As a community, we need to promote a better understanding to lessen the stigma, so people will talk about it and get help. “This is a way to take an activity that already has a following and use it to raise money and awareness on an important topic.” |
